Why call it Puddle Jumper Days?

Puddle Jumper Days has been an annual tradition since Odessa celebrated its centennial in 1978.  The event was named after a train called a "puddle jumper," which made stops at Odessa and other area towns for over 80 years, until the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio Railroad discontinued this service in 1960.  The first full weekend of August was chosen as the date for the festivities.
